The delay in the implementation of the new Patented Medicines Regulations to July 1, 2021 means that patentees can take 2021 price increases on medicines under PMPRB jurisdiction.
PMPRB has released the 2021 CPI-Based Price-Adjustment Factors for Patented Drug Products. The table below provides these factors and the maximum allowable cumulative price increase from previous years to 2021. The year-over-year price increase cap for the 12-month period ending December 2021 is 3.0% (=1.5 x Actual Inflation in 2019).
Benchmark Year | 2018 | 2019 | 2020 |
Price-Adjustment Factor | 1.059 | 1.043 | 1.020 |
Maximum allowable cumulative price increase (%) | 5.9% | 4.3% | 2.0% |
Please note that the first deadlines for notifying public payers of 2021 price increases for April 1st are January 15, 2021 for Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Prince Edward Island.
